It's the most wonderful time of the year in Walt Disney World, and it has been since the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Through the years, Disney has been featured in a number of specials that have aired on television showcasing and celebrating the holidays in the parks. This video showcases one of the more interesting ones. In the early 1980's, you may remember the mime duo "Shields and Yarnell,"a mime duo featuring performances by Robert Shields and Lorene Yarnell. From 1977-1978, they had their own CBS TV comedy show, The Shields and Yarnell Show, and were also featured on Sonny and Cher, The Muppet Show and the Tonight Show. Lorene Yarnell also appeared in the 1987 Mel Brooks film Spaceballs as the robot Dot Matrix. This clip is from an early 1980's special in which the pair, known as the Clinkers, visit Walt Disney World for the holidays. Notice that they are flying Eastern Airlines (then the official airline of Walt Disney World and sponsor of If You Had Wings). Take a look at the old Fort Wilderness railroad, the "original" Treehouse Villas, and the Fife and Drum Corps in Liberty Square. And what's that? An outdoor buffet inside the Magic Kingdom? The rest speaks for itself... Enjoy! |
